Rotate specific pages of a PDF and leave the rest alone

Turn page 7, or pages 3, 9 and 14, or everything except two. Here is how to pick the pages, fix a slip and be sure that only the right pages changed.

The short answer: tap only the pages that need turning

You don't have to turn a whole PDF to fix one page. Rotate PDF shows a small picture of every page. You turn only the pictures that look wrong, and every other page is saved exactly as it was.

  1. Add your PDF. Press Choose PDF files and pick it, or drop it anywhere on the page.
  2. Find the wrong pages. Every page is a card with a name like Page 1, Page 2 and so on.
  3. Turn them. Tap a page's picture for a quarter turn to the right. For a turn to the left, use the left arrow on its card.
  4. Look for the yellow tags. A page you turned gets a tag such as 90° or 180°. A page with no tag will not change.
  5. Save and download. Press the yellow Save button, then Download. The new file has -rotated added to its name, and your original is not touched.

Nothing is uploaded: your browser turns the pages on your own phone or computer, so it is safe for Aadhaar and PAN card copies and bank statements. That is all you need when one page is wrong. The rest of this article is for bigger jobs.

Try it: no file handy? Press "Try with a sample PDF" on the tool. Its 4 pages include one sideways page and one upside-down page. Turn just those two and notice that pages 1 and 4 carry no tag.

Which way is quickest for your job

Rotate PDF has no box where you type page numbers such as 5 to 12. So the quickest way depends on how many pages are wrong, and how many are right:

Your jobQuickest way
One page is wrongTap its picture, or use the arrows on its card.
A few pages, far apart (say 3, 9 and 14)Turn each one on its own card. The pages in between are not touched.
A run of pages next to each other (say 5 to 12)Tap each card in turn. If the run is most of the file, use the next row instead.
Most pages are wrong and a few are rightTurn the whole file with the arrows on its heading, then turn the few good pages back.
Every second page, such as the backs of a two-sided scanTap each one. An upside-down page needs two taps. There is no odd-or-even button.
Wrong pages in more than one PDFAdd all the PDFs and turn pages on each file's cards.

A simple way to choose: count the wrong pages and the right pages, then work on the smaller group. If 4 pages out of 30 are wrong, turn those 4. If 27 are wrong and 3 are right, turn the whole file and put the 3 back. The guide's table under left, right and angles shows what to press for each kind of sideways page.

Finding the wrong pages in a long PDF

In a short PDF you can see the wrong pages at a glance. In a long one, a little planning saves a lot of scrolling.

  • Go by the card's name and picture. A card named Page 14 is simply the 14th page of the file, counting the cover as page 1. The number printed on the page itself can be different, for example when the cover and contents pages carry no number. When the two disagree, go by the card.
  • On a phone, read the names, not the rows. The cards sit two or three to a row, so a long PDF means plenty of scrolling. Check the name under each card rather than counting rows.
  • Give the pictures a moment. Each card's picture is drawn as it comes near the screen, so a book of hundreds of pages is not drawn all at once. A card still loading shows a moving shine instead of a picture. Scroll to the pages you need and wait for their pictures.
  • A card that says "No preview" means its picture couldn't be drawn. You can still turn it, and its yellow tag still shows the angle. But with no picture you can't judge which way it needs to go, so look at that page in another PDF reader first.
  • Make a list in a reader first. Open the PDF in our PDF Viewer. Its side panel shows a small picture of every page, and its page box shows where you are, like 7 / 120. The viewer counts pages the same way as the cards, from the first page of the file. Write the sideways pages on paper or in your phone's notes, like "3, 9, 14: right once. 22: twice", then go straight to those cards.
  • Search for a word, if the PDF has real text. Pages with a big table often carry a caption such as "Table 4". The viewer's search moves to each place a word appears, and the page box changes to the page you are now on. Most scans are only pictures, with no words to search, so for scans go by the pictures.
  • Don't try to fix it in the viewer. The PDF Viewer has a Turn button too, but it turns every page, and only on your screen. It never changes the file. Use it to read sideways pages, then do the real turning in Rotate PDF.

Turning, counting tags and undoing a slip

When you turn a page, its picture on the card turns too, so what you see is what will be saved. Stop when the text reads upright. You never need to know how the page was set before, because the card already shows it.

  • Two ways to turn. Tapping the picture is always a quarter turn to the right. The arrows on a card turn it left or right. On a touch screen the arrows are always showing. With a mouse, they appear when you point at the card.
  • Read the tag. It counts clockwise from how the page was when you added it. One right turn shows 90°, two show 180°, and three show 270°. One left turn also shows 270°, because it ends in the same place, so a tag never says "left".
  • Turned the wrong page? Press the opposite arrow on that card once. The picture turns back and the tag goes away. A page that is back where it started no longer counts as turned, and four turns the same way do the same.
  • Turned a whole file by mistake? Press the opposite arrow on the file's heading once. Every page of that file goes back to where it was before your slip, and pages you had turned on their own keep those turns.
  • Added the wrong file? Press the X on its heading to take it out. For a clean start, Undo all turns clears every page of every file.

Before you save, run your eye down the cards once. Every card with a yellow tag will change, and every card without one will not. If you see a tag on a page you meant to leave alone, turn it back. That one look catches most mistakes.

Three jobs, step by step

These are made-up examples, to show how the choices work out.

One page of a 12-page application is sideways

Say page 7 is an Aadhaar card copy, scanned on its side. Scroll to the card named Page 7. The top of the text points left, so tap its picture once. A yellow 90° tag appears. Save and download. The other 11 pages have no tag and are not touched.

For a sense of speed: in our tests, a 14-page research paper with one page turned went from 992 KB to 927 KB and took 0.3 seconds. That was in Chromium 141, the open-source browser Google Chrome is built on, on a Linux computer with 4 processor cores and 16 GB of memory. Your device may be faster or slower.

27 of 30 scanned pages came out sideways

Turning 27 cards one by one is 27 taps. Instead, press the right arrow on the file's heading, which turns every page of that file. Then press the left arrow on each of the 3 good pages to put them back. Their tags disappear. That is 4 presses instead of 27.

This works when the 27 all lean the same way. If a few lean the other way, they come out upside down after the file turn, so give each of those two more presses.

Two files, and only one needs turning

Say a marksheet scan needs its page 2 turned, and your PAN card copy, a separate PDF, is already fine. Add both files. Each gets its own heading and its own cards. Turn page 2 of the marksheet. The Save button says "Save turned PDF", because only one file has a turned page. The PAN card copy is left out of the result, and you keep using the original.

If you turned a page in both files, the button would say "Save 2 turned PDFs" and you would get one ZIP file, rotated-pdfs.zip, with a PDF for each. See turning several PDFs at once.

Wide pages: turn the sideways ones, leave the rest

When a report or an application pack has a few wide pages, the real question is which of them to turn. Ask one thing of each: can I read it without tilting my head? If yes, it is wide on purpose, so leave it. If no, it is lying on its side, so turn it until the lines run from left to right.

Don't turn a wide page just to make it match the others. A wide table turned to stand upright has its words running up the side, which is the very problem you are trying to remove. Turn pages to fix their direction, not their shape.

What you wantWhat to do
Wide pages that read sidewaysTurn only those, here in Rotate PDF.
Every page on the same paper sizeA different job. Resize PDF can change pages to A4 or Letter, and its "As it is" choice keeps each page upright or wide as it was. It fits what is on a page to the new sheet without turning it, so turn sideways pages here first.
The wide pages together, or somewhere elseRotate PDF never moves pages. Organize PDF does.

Check that only the right pages changed

When the file is saved, a row appears under the tool. Use it, and then use your own eyes:

  • Count the pages turned. The row says how many pages were turned, with the size before and after. If you meant to turn five and it says 6 pages turned, one tap slipped. Turn the extra page back and save again.
  • Open the new file in a different app. Its name ends in -rotated. If the original is in the same folder, it is easy to open the wrong one, so check the name. A turn saved in the file shows in other readers too.
  • Scroll through every page, not only the ones you turned. The pages you left alone should look just as they did before.
  • Look at the portal's preview after you upload, if it shows one. It is the closest you can get to what the person checking your papers will see.

We checked this with real files too. A second PDF reader, Poppler, found every page of every result in its place, with only the turned pages facing a new way. The guide's real results list the files and how we compared them.

Links, bookmarks, forms and page labels come through as they were. One catch: a digitally signed PDF no longer carries a valid signature once any page is turned, so send the original if someone must check the signature. See what stays the same.

Other ways to turn some pages, and when they fit

  • Organize PDF, on this site, can turn single pages too. Each press of its turn button is a quarter turn to the right, so three presses turn a page left, and its Undo steps back one change at a time. Choose it when you also want to move, copy or delete pages, and see copying and turning in its guide. Choose Rotate PDF for left turns in one press, a whole file at once, or several PDFs that must stay separate files.
  • Desktop apps such as Preview on a Mac and Adobe Acrobat let you select several page pictures at once and turn them together. For a long run of pages, that beats tapping cards one by one.
  • Online tools that upload your file can do the job, and many are well made, but your ID cards or bank statements go to someone else's server.
  • Printing to a new PDF, for example with Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, is a poor fit. Print settings such as portrait or landscape apply to the whole printout, not to the pages you pick, and the fresh copy it makes often loses clickable links, bookmarks and form fields.

What Rotate PDF can't do

  • No page-range box. You can't type "5 to 12", and there is no odd or even button. You tap cards, or turn the whole file and turn some back.
  • No guessing. The tool doesn't find the sideways pages for you. You decide, by looking at the pictures.
  • Quarter turns only. A scan tilted by a few degrees can't be straightened, because the tilt is inside the scanned picture. Scan that page again, laid straight.
  • Whole pages only. One table within a page can't be turned alone, and pages aren't moved, deleted or added here.
  • No locked files. A PDF that needs a password to open can't be used until it is unlocked.

Questions people ask next

Will the pages I didn't touch change in any way?

No. Only the turned pages get a new rotation setting. Pages are never drawn again or compressed again, so text stays sharp and searchable, and scans keep every pixel.

How many pages can I turn in one go?

We set no limit. The only limit is your device's memory, so very large files are easier on a computer than on a phone. On the same test computer as above, turning every page of a 400-page colour scan of 454.8 MB took 9.2 seconds, and the new file was 454.7 MB.

I saved, then noticed a page was wrong. What now?

Your original was never changed, so nothing is lost. If the tool is still open, turn the page on its card. The Download row goes away and the Save button comes back. Save again and download the new copy.

If you already closed it, add the -rotated file you saved. Its cards show the pages as they are now, with no tags yet, so turn just the one wrong page and save again.

Do I need to shrink the file afterwards?

Only if it was too big before, since turning barely changes the size. Shrink last, with Resize PDF for a portal's exact limit or our PDF compressor for email.
